There are many new and exciting things happening with the Colorado Certified Potato Growers Association. We have two new russet varieties that show great potential and several specialty varieties that can play an important role in the specialty chipping industry along with the fresh market industry.

Rio Grande Russet

The Rio Grande Russet continues to grow in popularity and shows a lot of promise. It shows good resistant to the mosaic virus which is so important in keeping your farm clean from such viruses. It is a late maturing russet with a very attractive light color. It has been tested and shows a high level of antioxidants along with very excellent taste. There have been several of our growers that have had yields consistently over 500 sacks to the acre.

AC 92009-4RU

The other russet on the horizon is the AC92009-4RU. This cultivar, like the Rio Grande Russet, shows good resistant to the mosaic virus. It has a darker skin than the Rio Grande Russet but has an extremely good shape and profile to it. It is a medium maturing, oblong russet with the primary use being the fresh market. Yields to date are in the 400 sacks per acre area.

Purple Majesty

The Purple Majesty and Mountain Rose continue to climb in popularity for the specialty market. We recently have had several companies trying out these varieties for their chipping potential and the results have looked very positive. David Holm, CSU’s potato plant breeder, sent these varieties to a chipper in Colorado Springs to see how they would chip, hold their color, and taste. The results were favorable in all three categories. Along with this, several of the specialty super markets have found interest in these varieties to add color to the dinner plate along with some surprisingly good taste. In addition to these cultivars, we have several yellows for you to choose from.

All of these varieties mentioned above are under PVP, (Plant Variety Protection). If you would like to be considered to become a participant in growing any of these varieties for seed or just need information on them, please contact Preston Stanley at 719-274-5996 or by e-mail at ccpga@yahoo.com.
